5 Simple Swaps For Your Baby!

Okay, I’m sure you read the title of this post and thought to yourself “Here we go, another momma who’s here to tell me I’m doing it all wrong.”

While my passion is all about educating those around me on how to make safer, healthier swaps in their daily routine – I’m also a realist. I’m here to tell you that this lifestyle is all about progress, not perfection. It’s the 80/20 rule. It’s called finding a balance and making small changes in your daily routine that will have a lasting impact on your health and that of your families.

I’m the mom who gets her scheduled workouts in, but can throw down some tacos and a good margarita. I love shopping at Whole Foods, but I ALWAYS forget my reusable bags. I’ve been on both sides of the aisle when it comes to formula feeding and breastfeeding and yep…we use LOTS of disposable diapers. I’m FAR from perfect, but when I learn that one swap here, and one swap there in our everyday routine can help improve my family’s health and it’s easy, I make it happen!

For the longest time I thought we lived in a country that regulates EVERYTHING. So imagine my surprise when I learned that companies are legally allowed to use harmful ingredients in the products we use in our homes and on our bodies daily.

Decades of studies indicate that serious health issues (think infertility, hormone disruption, cancer, asthma and many others) are on the rise and are due in some part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals. Of the 80,000+ chemicals on the market today – only 10% have ever been tested for human safety.

Ugh. So where do we go from here? Well, if cleaning up bits and pieces of your home environment interests you, then keep reading! If not – I promise I won’t be offended…I’m just a momma who’s passionate about sharing what I’ve learned with others in hopes that this information will serve another momma or two in a positive way!

Today I’m honing in on 5 safer product swaps for your baby!

This is where it all started for me…my first pregnancy with Brooks.  I was reading ALL the books and came across a section in my “What To Expect When You’re Expecting” book (a classic right??) about how many of the products I was using in my home and on my body could have a negative impact on my baby while in utero.

It was my ah-ha moment and I think we can ALL agree that we would do just about anything to keep our babies safe. So one by one I began switching out the products in my home starting with my personal care and cleaning products. Next I researched safer baby products for my baby registry which led me to this top 5 list of “Small Changes, BIG Impact for baby”…so here we go!

1. Glass vs. Plastic Bottles

Did you know that heating up plastic bottles (even BPA free bottles) can still release and leach estrogen mimickers into your milk?  There are so many brands making glass bottles now which is fantastic! I personally use and love Dr. Brown bottles.

2. Diapers & Wipes

By law, diaper manufacturers are not required to disclose the component parts of diapers and there is very little research that exists on the chemicals found in diapers.  Many disposable diapers include chemicals like volatile organic compounds (VOCs, including toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and dipentene), sodium polyacrylate or SAP, dioxins, polyurethane, adhesives, lotions, inks, fragrances, and pesticide residue.  Chemicals like these can have toxic health effects and may irritate little babes’ skin, eyes, and lungs.

Look for diapers and wipes without added chemicals, dyes, parabens or perfumes.  Again, we have lots of options these days as consumers continue to demand safer products for their babies!

A few really great options for both diapers (and baby wipes!) are Seventh GenerationBambo and Pampers even makes their “Pampers Pure” collection.  Or…some may already use and love cloth diapers, so that’s another great option and they are earth friendly.

3. Baby Shampoos/Bath Products

Did you know tiny baby bodies are more susceptible to chemical absorption than that of adults?  With so many baby products on the market that “claim to be safe or natural”, but still contain formaldehyde, carcinogenic ingredients and hormone disrupting chemicals, you’ll want to find a brand that is safe and effective!

Repeated, daily exposure to ingredients that penetrate our skin and enter our bloodstream, matter, and can accumulate in our bodies over time. Look at brands like Attitude LivingBeautycounterHonest Company & Seventh Generation – all are reputable brands that vow to leave out the yuck when it comes to bath time with your littles.

4. Pacifiers

Think about all the things your baby puts into their mouth for long periods of time!  Both of my babies are paci loving babes, so finding something safe was important to me! Natursutten makes a natural rubber pacifier that is soft and sustainable.  They are free of allergy causing substances, colorants, hormone disrupting chemicals, parabens, PVC and phthalates!

5. Baby Chew/Teething Toys

Along the same lines as pacifiers, are baby toys.  Again there are many options on the market, but we really love and trust the brand called Oli and Carol.  They make their teething toys from 100% natural rubber and are hand painted with food grade dyes making them completely safe for your baby to chew on!  They’re also PVC, BPA, Phthalate and Nitrosamine free + biodegradable.

Hopefully this list of a few simple and safe swaps for baby, helps you to find that 80/20 balance for your family!
