let's talk safer beauty...
Almost 5 years ago I connected the dots when it came to my health, hormones and home environment. I was working out regularly and eating organically when possible, but would then come home and unknowingly slather hundreds of harmful chemicals and ingredients on my body's largest organ...my skin. It wasn't until several years ago when I became pregnant with our first child Brooks that I started to really uncover the other areas of my health. I found I was completely missing the mark, and I was outraged by what I had learned. You're telling me the beauty and baby products that line the shelves of so many of my favorite stores most likely contain ingredients that have never been tested for human safety?? Ingredients with KNOWN links to reproductive issues, cancers, hormone disruption, birth defects and ADHD (to name a few) are legally allowed in our the products that we use every single day and with little to no oversight by our government?
Learning about the lack of regulation in the beauty industry was infuriating. I felt duped as a mother who considered herself to be an educated consumer and an avid nutrition label reader. In July of 2014, just 2 weeks before my due date, I said it was time to do something about this issue. And so I did...
I partnered with a new startup company called Beautycounter to become a voice for change when it comes to the toxic chemicals that are found in many personal care products on the market. You see, the European Union has identified and banned over 1400 ingredients that have been linked to health harm while the United States has only banned 30 to date. We can do better as a nation. At Beautycounter, we're doing something about it. Our mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone through education; providing safe, high-performing solutions and advocating for more health protective laws in Washington DC. We have taken our standard of safety to the strictest measure through our "Never List" of over 1500 chemicals/ingredients that we will never ever include in our products.
My Pregnancy & dry winter skin must-haves!
* Citrus Mimosa Body Butter - I'm obsessed with this body butter as it absorbs easily (without feeling greasy) and is perfect for very dry skin + my growing baby bump! Shea butter and mongongo oil hydrate and nourish skin, while organic sunflower oil, aloe, and chamomile soothe and smooth.
* Citrus Mimosa Body Lotion - For days I want something lightweight and fast-absorbing I reach for this body lotion. A moisturizing blend of marula, mongongo, and safflower seed oils, plus shea and jojoba butters. Rich in antioxidants and amino and fatty acids too.
* Citrus Rosemary Body Oil - with 13 botanical oils this full body oil leaves your skin instantly moisturized - especially if applied right after bathing to damp skin (which will lock in moisture) OR you can add a few drops to your Body Lotion or Body Butter to intensify its effects! Another one that's perfect for baby bumps/preventing stretch marks & it can even act as a natural bug repellant!
* Sugar Body Scrub In Lemongrass - One of Beautycounter's best selling products with multiple features in Goop! I use this one to two times a week to exfoliate AND moisturize! Made with brown sugar to buff away dull skin, and mineral-rich evening primrose, sweet almond, apricot kernel, and sunflower oils to leave skin looking supple and smooth.
Are Your personal care products safe??
For more than a decade, tens of millions of people have relied on Skin Deep® ratings to limit their exposure to health-harming ingredients that are still found in cosmetics because of weak regulations. The Skin Deep database is a great resource for consumers who want to educate themselves about the chemicals they are putting on their body.
Part of the EWG’s mission is to increase transparency in the marketplace and shine a spotlight on the many weak standards that govern consumer products. For example, the U.S. government does not require safety testing of personal care items before they hit store shelves. Companies can use almost any ingredient – including potentially harmful ones – in their products and without telling us. The EWG's goal is to help consumers everywhere make more informed buying decisions when it comes to their personal care & household products.
Beautycounter Baby! why safe ingredients matter so, so much...
These 3 baby products were my very first purchase with Beautycounter. I was 37 weeks pregnant and having learned about so many other baby products on the market that were full of hormone disruptors, formeldahyde releasers, carcinogens, synthetic musks and more - I knew I had to do better by my baby!
Babies are so much more susceptible to chemical absorption through their precious little skin and are more vulnerable than adults are to the effects of these toxic chemicals! The thing I love most about the Beautycounter Baby Line is that the entire collection is completely unscented - because babies are clean + pure and they deserve products that are exactly the same. Unscented and uncomplicated formulas that deliver are the only skincare necessities your baby needs
* Baby Soothing Oil - Totally OBSESSED! I use this on myself, my 3.5 year old Brooks & will be stocking up for new baby too! It's a fairly dry oil that won't make your baby greasy or slippery or stain your clothing. A mix of organic coconut, jojoba, and sunflower seed oils, our dry oil soothes and softens skin for a nourishing experience.
* Baby Daily Protective Balm - There's nothing this product can't fix ;-) We use on the entire family for cuts, soothing skin irritations, prevent chafing, treating eczema or dry patches, cuticle treatment and more! Designed to be gentle enough for newborns, our barrier balm is the ultimate hydrating powerhouse.
Why i've added ACTIVATED charcoal to my beauty routine
As someone who has struggled with that "one week a month" hormonal breakout throughout most of my adult life - the discovery of activated charcoal and its skin clearing benefits has been a game changer in my daily routine. I use this LBB (little black bar) morning and night as my daily cleanser...my husband does too ;-)
Charcoal has gained a lot of attention lately in the health/beauty world and for good reason. This powerhouse ingredient can "detox" your skin and draw out impurities, but I must also note that not all Charcoal products are created equal!
Beautycounter's Charcoal Cleansing Bar was formulated using a special type of activated charcoal powder called Binchotan that comes from Japanese Ubame Oak. It's like a magnet for your skin - drawing out impurities, cleansing and detoxifying + this bar helps absorb excess oil without drying out your skin thanks to hydrating organic coconut and sunflower seed oil.
Pore reduction too? Check! Antioxidant-rich green tea extract and witch hazel work to refine pores and balance skin, so it’s perfect for those with combination skin. These ingredients help give you a clearer, healthier-looking complexion, and who doesn’t want that?
PS >>> You'll want to check out the Balancing Charcoal Mask too.
good soap - a whole foods exclusive!
When it comes to skincare & cosmetics, of course I favor Beautycounter because I need both safe AND high-performing products...but I also love a good, clean bar soap!
Alaffia Good Soap (a Whole Foods Exclusive) are Certified Fair Trade Shea Butter, Coconut Oil and Goat Milk to name a few of the all-star ingredients + Good Soap sales fund Alaffia community empowerment projects in West Africa. Just a another example of a company that is doing well by doing good!! I'll always support that! Plus many of their products have a safety rating score of 1 on the EWG's Skin Deep Database - another WIN in my book.
WHY YOU’LL WANT TO ADD VITAMIN C TO YOUR SKIN CARE ROUTINE
Out of all the so-called “miracle” ingredients on the skin care scene, it can be hard to tell which ones are the real deal and which are little more than snake oil. One nutrient that’s proven to be worth the hype? Vitamin C—a powerful, safe, science-backed compound that doesn’t just refine your complexion, but actually protects it from future damage.
Here, we break down vitamin C’s benefits for skin, whether you should get it topically or through food, and how to find it on an ingredient list, since it usually goes incognito. (As all the biggest superstars often do.)

Two peas in a pod right here 🙌🏻 Meet Beautycounter’s Best Selling Countermatch Eye Rescue Cream! Featuring Squalane (derived from olives) to hydrate and betaine (from sugar beets) + phytic acid to boost oxygenation to reduce fine lines.
Also featured is the Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion...another best seller! Why you ask?! Well just like the eye cream it features a patented bio-mimic technology that literally adapts to YOUR skin’s exact needs! Giving your skin precisely what it needs and nothing it doesn’t - WINNING!
What my clients and I LOVE about our Countermatch line is that it’s lightweight + provides 24 hours of hydration + it actually adjusts hydration levels throughout the day + it’s great for all skin types - especially dry or sensitive skin and...formulated without the use of harsh, health-harming ingredients 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Finally! a safer deodorant that actually works...
After learning more about the potentially harmful ingredients found in conventional deodorant formulas I made it my mission to make the #switchtosafer. But let me just say...it wasn't an easy transition and as someone who sweats A LOT during Crossfit workouts - I needed something that was not only safe, but high-performing!! I tried my share of safer, cleaner options...probably a dozen and while Primal Pit Paste was one of my favorites, I recently discovered Native and now I'm hooked.
Here's WHY switching to a safer deodorant matters!
Aluminum—the active ingredient in many conventional antiperspirants that keeps you dry—has raised the most concerns for its potential link to everything from breast cancer to Alzheimer's. While studies around the long-term health risks are not yet conclusive, there is research to suggest that aluminum may have genotoxic and estrogenic effects and may contribute to breast cancer. Instead of aluminum, all natural deodorants rely on plant-based powders and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to help absorb wetness without any of the controversial chemicals.
Other questionable ingredients found in conventional deodorants include: parabens, propylene glycol, phthalates, and triclosan...again more unnecessary hormone disrupters that DON'T belong in our products.
What does “clean beauty” really mean?
“Does it really matter?”
It’s a good question—and I get it. There’s a lot of information out there, and it’s hard to know who and what to trust. When you walk into a drugstore, you probably see a ton of claims on shampoos, lotions, and makeup: “clean,” “natural,” “paraben-free,” “non-toxic,” just to name a few. It’s important to understand that the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) actually has little regulatory authority to oversee personal care products and their marketing claims. So, you’re right to feel a little suspicious.
